a feeling of great surprise
Example: They discovered to their astonishment that their car had been stolen

Usually refers to a dark character of something or spotted

Something that is always in dark places or without much lighting

Noun
A small settlement, generally one smaller than a village, and strictly one without a church (in Britain)
Example: Having no church in the hamlet, people have nowhere to demonstrate their faith
